NEW! Substance Use and Abuse among U.S. Military Personnel, Veterans and their Families (R01)
Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is issued by NIDA, NIAAA, NCI, and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to enhance and accelerate research on the epidemiology/etiology, identification, and prevention and treatment of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and abuse (including illicit and prescription drugs) and associated mental health problems among active-duty or recently separated (e.g., Iraq and Afghanistan) military troops and their families. VA has specific interest in supporting research directed towards advancing prevention and treatment of mental health and comorbid substance use/abuse problems in veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan deployments (including National Guard and Reservists) and their families.
The application due date is December 22, 2009; Letters of Intent due November 23, 2009.

Network(s) for Developing PTSD Risk Assessment Tools (R21)
This RFA provides VA investigators an opportunity to compete for funding from VA and NIMH to identify clinically useful metrics for PTSD risk assessment that will inform early intervention research, emergency medicine, and other clinicians about who might benefit most from early intervention after trauma. It will be important to have research and clinical decision tools that are sensitive to and meaningful for diverse populations of trauma survivors. Applicants are strongly encouraged to consider the potential impact of multiple socio-demographic characteristics and other factors in choosing data sets for exploration.

The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Health Services Research and
Development Service (HSR&D) invites applications for Pilot Projects. Funds
provided under this initiative are for preliminary investigation prior to full-scale
proposals to strengthen the evidence for a larger HSR&D research study or assure
the research objectives are feasible. This solicitation is open to investigators who

Special Solicitation for Projects Implementing Research into Practice to Improve Care Delivery

VHA seeks to increase collaboration between Research and Operations with a particular emphasis on using the QUERI model to improve care delivery. Proposals responsive to this solicitation will include efforts that:
a. Implement research findings and guidelines into routine practice.
b. Evaluate specific programs and strategies to improve VHA health care quality.
c. Develop evidence and insights about effective implementation and quality improvement approaches.
d. Create - through partnerships and collaborations with VHA leaders, managers, and policymakers at local, network, and national levels - sustainable tools, processes, and infrastructure that support improved quality.
