Please Note: The technology listed below is not available to the public at this time. This technology requires further development before it is ready for the marketplace. The VA is currently in the process of identifying potential companies who may be interested to commercially develop the technology. The VA inventors are available to collaborate with interested companies through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA). Through cooperative research initiatives such as these, it is our hope and goal that commercial products will be fully developed and made available to benefit veterans and others.
OPPORTUNITY:
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is seeking a commercial partner to further develop and commercialize a novel data logger system for monitoring wheelchair usage to enhance safety. The inventors can collaborate, as desired, with interested commercial partners utilizing a CRADA.
TECHNOLOGY BACKGROUND AND DESCRIPTION:
VA researchers have developed prototypes of a data logger to monitor wheelchair usage. While data logging is a common commercial activity used in many industries for safety and other purposes, it does not appear to have been exploited for use in wheelchairs for safety purposes. Information about the usage of power wheelchair features (i.e. tilt-in-space, recline, and seat elevation) may help users, caregivers, and clinicians know if these features are being utilized safely and effectively. Such information may also be used to alert these individuals when to use the features to relieve pressure. In addition, information related to shock and system failures can enable the data logging device to become a safety and security system. Such a device will enable researchers to more thoroughly investigate the effect of interventions on safety, participation, and activity, which would provide important support for public policy and help facilitate improved wheelchair designs.
The new data logger has the following features that create advantages over currently used wheel rotation data loggers:
IP STATUS: No patent was filed for this invention. The VA is currently seeking CRADA partners to further develop this technology.
