Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is one of the most common complications following cardiac surgery. Veterans are not spared from this frequent complication: the incidence of new onset atrial arrhythmias requiring treatment ranges from 30% for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) to 64% for patients undergoing a combined CABG and mitral valve replacement.
