Background and Significance. Cryptococcus neoformans and C. gattii are encapsulated yeasts that cause chronic infections in both immunocompetent and immunosuppressed individuals and are responsible for over 625,000 deaths each year. Amphotericin B (AmB) has been the mainstay of treatment for cryptococcal menin- goencephalitis (CME).
