Abstract Ischemia causes a massive loss of both oligodendrocytes and its progenitor cells (OPCs), the only cells responsible for myelination in the CNS, leading to axonal damage and demyelination, failure of nerve signal conduction, sensorimotor dysfunction, and cognitive impairments.
