The metabolic pathways in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) that contribute to fatty liver’s progression to inflammation are being intensely studied. One pathway which has been overlooked is the CYP27A1 initiated ‘alternative pathway.’ This pathway is responsible for the metabolism of cholesterol to intracellular regulatory oxysterols.
