Advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end stage renal disease (ESRD) are characterized by the inability of the diseased kidney to respond to hypoxia with adequate production of erythropoietin (EPO), the glycoprotein hormone that is essential for the generation of red blood cells, and is furthermore associated with absolute and functional iron deficiency.
