Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by increased deposition of fat in the liver that may progress to inflammation, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver failure. NAFLD is closely linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. It remains a major public health problem with little progress made on its treatment.
