BACKGROUND: Veterans are at elevated and increasing risk for suicide, relative to civilians. In particular, female Veterans are nearly twice as likely to die by suicide, compared to female civilians. In addition, 70% of Veterans who died by suicide did not use any Veterans Health Administration (VHA) care in the year before death.
