CReATE Motion Center: Cartilage Regeneration using Advanced Technologies to Enable Motion

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic condition marked by the gradual breakdown of cartilage and bone in the joints, resulting in pain, stiffness and reduced mobility for those affected. It is the most common form of arthritis, and Veterans are diagnosed with OA at substantially higher rates than the general public. The focus of the CReATE Motion Center is on preserving and regenerating cartilage by developing non-surgical, biologic and molecular treatments. We aim to eliminate the need for joint replacement surgery by addressing arthritis at its various stages, including halting disease progression early on, preserving healthy cartilage during the disease's middle stages, and ultimately replacing cartilage in those with advanced stage arthritis.

Our center’s mission is to restore joint function and transform the long-term health of our Veterans with arthritis by developing a translational pipeline for advanced cartilage and joint regenerative therapies aimed at treating arthritis, joint injuries, and related joint disorders, by cultivating core infrastructure and building an intellectual critical mass in this area. We will apply this framework to accelerate the clinical implementation of strategies to restore joint function. We are supporting pre-clinical and clinical trial design and execution to ensure rapid translation of emergent technologies to first-in-human clinicals.
